Autistic children improved reading, brain activity after 10-week reading intervention
Children with ASD have less brain connectivity between areas of the brain necessary for reading. The Lindamood-Bell reading intervention (Visualizing and Verbalizing for Language Comprehension and Thinking) teaches children to form images when they read and hear language. This imagery-language connection in the brain improves oral and reading comprehension, vocabulary and higher-order thinking skills. It capitalises on the fact that ASD children are relatively better at visual/spatial processing and uses this strength to improve language comprehension. The ASD children in this study improved brain connectivity which correlated with improvements in reading comprehension. It is yet another example of brain plasticity.
